Motorhead @ Portsmouth Guildhall

Motorhead 1At one point one the loudest band on earth, Motorhead proved this fact with a thunderous set of blisteringly loud metal. The night started off with great support by the all girl metal band Girlschool followed by legendary punk rock band The Damned. With a large crowd of metallers, punks and goths waiting in anticipation at seeing the rock god himself, it was obvious that this was going to be a loud gig. The lights went down, the noise came up and on stage is Lemmy, a real living rock legend.

As this tour wasn’t for a new album, the set was a great mix of old and new songs from the bands 35 year back catalogue. For a band consisting of just 3 guys over the age of 40, the sound was intense and everyone could not help but jump and bang their heads. There’s something about being in the presence of a group of such notoriety that just possess you to move. Amongst the old favourites of ‘Bomber’, ‘Iron fist and ‘Killed By Death’, newer songs such as ‘Killers, ‘Rock Out’ and ‘One Night Stand’ blended together nicely. As soon as the band went off stage and the place turned pitch black, the floor shook tremendously from an encore being demanded.

A screeching cheer exploded as the band returned to play 2 last songs; The world famous ‘Ace Of Spades’ and an extended version of ‘Overkill’. This is the 5th time I have seen this band and I am already looking to get tickets for them next year. After 35 years, things have only got better.
